TATTOO HISTORY EXHIBIT BY NED BURWELL on site at the Toronto Tattoo Show NIX 2026

There is no doubt that Canada boasts a rich and vibrant tattoo history. Ned aims to pay tribute to the pioneers of Canadian tattooing and is presently working on a book about the history of the Canadian electric tattoo scene, a project he has been dedicated to for several years. Featuring figures like Charlie Snow, Paul Jeffries, Keith Stewart, and Tony D'Anessa, this exhibit is set to be a remarkable showcase.

This exhibit will showcase the evolution and history of the Canadian tattoo scene that has adapted and grown alongside the ever changing nature and culture of tattooing as a whole in the modern world.

From its early roots, where tattoos were often associated with maritime culture and the military, to the contemporary era where body art is embraced as a form of personal expression and artistry, the Canadian tattoo landscape has undergone significant transformations.

In addition to showcasing artwork, the exhibit will also highlight the stories of prominent Canadian tattoo artists and studios that have played pivotal roles in the development of the industry. Through interviews and photographs attendees will gain insight into the lives of these artists, their creative processes, and the challenges they faced in a profession that has often been stigmatized.

Overall, this exhibit aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the Canadian tattoo scene, celebrating its rich history while also considering its future trajectory.
